New to modding in Skyrim? Here’s a quick way to get started
Getting started the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim creation kit is simple if you know what you’re doing, so here’s how
The Skyrim Creation Kit is incredibly powerful, though not if you don’t know how to use it. If you’re unsure of whether to start, here’s a handy guide on the installation process.
First, the Kit requires users to have a Steam account and a copy of Skyrim. Download the Kit from Steam. Then:
1. Step Launch Steam and log into your account
2. Step Update Steam
3. Step Head over to the Game Library
4. Step Set the drop-down filter to Tools
5. Step Find the entry called Creation Kit, then right-click and choose Install Game
After installing, launching the Creation Kit will present nothing. It’s time to get some content into the Creation Kit.
There are two file formats to pay attention to: the .esm files, which are Master Files and are collections of data. The Skyrim .ese files contain all the base data.
There are also plugins, displayed as .esp files, which can be load on top of master files. Plugins are the main save file for your mod. Make sure to not load multiple plugins, as only the last loaded plugin will run.
To create your first plugin load the Skyrim.ese file from Files, Data and then double click on it and click OK. This can take a few minutes to load.
To now create the plugin navigate to File, Save again. Call the file whatever you want.
To load the plugin into the game, there are two ways:
1. Step Select Data and then the plugin
2. Step More advanced users can SkyrimCustom.ini and specify plugins to load
Enterting console commands
For those not familiar with modding, it’s best to head over to the Creation Kit wiki Tutorial Hub which has various guide and resources to get the best out of the package. The Kit also allows players to toggle effects through the console. Some are TGM, TWF and COC Riverwood SleepingGiantInn. There toggle invincibility (God Mode), turn on the wireframe view and fast travel to Riverwood Inn.
Once you have become experience with console commands, always keep a spare save because it is possible to break the game.
