Borderlands is basically a shooter that combines elements of HL2, XIII and Diablo. It’s using the cell-shading technology that creates dark black “ink” outlines and contour lines. You can gain experience points and collect valuable items on your way through the borderlands.
Borderlands Installation on Windows 7
Borderlands install error: “Installation ended prematurely because of an error.”
If you can’t properly install Borderlands on Windows 7, you might want to try this fix.
Open cmd.exe (Start -> enter cmd.exe into the search field) and enter the following line:
msiexec /i f:\setup.msi /qb
Make sure to change “f:” to your DVD drive or wherever your setup.msi is currently located.
What is it doing? Basically it will run the installer with a basic user interface /qb and launch a “normal installation” (/i). Therefore you will not see any graphical user interface, it will simply copy the files onto your PC.
Borderlands Performance Tweaks / Windows 7 Crash
Borderlands has quite a few problems. Unfortunately, people with ATI graphic cards experience a lot of problems. Owners of a HD5770 may experience more problems than others. Also gamers on Windows 7 have to deal with more crashes than others. Here are some possible fixes that might help you:
Rename Borderlands .exe
If you are experiencing a low frame rate although your graphic card is pretty good, you might want to try to rename the .exe file of the game to something else. Sidenote: Only do this if you have the retail edition of the game and not the Steam-edition.
If you are on Steam: Get a NOCD version of the .exe and just make a shortcut directly to that to launch. This is obviously not allowed, but if you bought the game on Steam and it doesn’t work, I don’t see a reason why you should not do it.
Re-Install ATI drivers
To boost your performance you have to re-install your ATI drivers. Important: Do *NOT* reboot after installing them. When you do it won’t work. You have to do that every time you want to play Borderlands, so I suggest to not shut down your PC for a while.

Borderlands Characters Trailer
The game starts with a presentation of all the game characters. It’s a pretty awesome intro-video for a game.

More questions?:
hey, i got this for christmas for my new windows 7 comp. i don’t know a whole lot about computer specs but i know enough that it should be running this game beautifully. however, once when i try to bring the resolution up i get a horrible framerate. i have a 9100 geforce, and the guide says to rename borderlands.exe to something else. what could i rename it to? thanks for any help.
jd, your 9100 is a low end graphics card, it’s no surprise that you can’t run it “beautifully” :P
Tip: The first number is the series (9) and the other numbers (100) is the power, it can go from 100 to 900. So you have a very crappy Geforce 9. I advise at least a 9600 to run games well. :)
The new cards are only 3 numbers, the first is the series, the other 2 are the power (ie, 310 is low, 390 is great).
I’m having an unusual problem i think, as i don’t see anyone with the same problem.. Borderlands is running excellent but i have.. don’t know what i should call them, but anyway. From the second i get “in-game” on my character (also inn the login screen), but not inn the videos. The screen constantly have these graphic errors.. It’s blinking black shadows all over the screen.
I don’t have this problem on any other game, like Call of duty mw2, Aion, Age of Conan. – All running at full graphic settings.
Anyone have a clue what i can do?..
Strauts, did you try to update your drivers? Is it a NVIDIA or ATI card?
Also try to disable AA, AF or other graphic settings temporarily. Make sure you have the latest DirectX and the correct 64-bit drivers for your card. Other than that there’s not much you can do. Maybe try to reset your BIOS settings or disable Vsync in games.
It’s an ATI card: ATI Radeon 5700 HD Series
Driver version: 10.8
Got DirectX 11 and the latest drivers.
But, exactly what is AA and AF? :/
And how do I disable Vsync?
Haven’t tried to reset the Bios settings, will do. Thanks
AA & AF = Antialiasing and Ansitropic Filtering
You should be able to disable Vsync in your Catalyst control center under OpenGL/D3D (display properties).
Sometimes, it can help to downgrade graphic card drivers for specific games. I know this might not be a solution, but if you’re trying to figure out what the problem is I would give it a try, but first try to diable Vsync it’s often causing problems.
I don’t get the menu up to turn off the Vsync..
Screenshot – the right application is mine, and the left is one i found on the internet.

Lucky for you I have an ATI atm as well..
Here you go:

Click on All, scroll down.. make sure Vertical refresh is Always Off .. drag the bar to the left
Update: Should anyone else have a NVIDIA card, here’s a short guide how to disable Vsync in the NVIDIA CP:
http://windows7themes.net/how-to-disable-vsync-in-windows-7.html
I have tried everything you suggested, with no result..
However I just noticed the same issue on CoDMW2, however i have to focus to notice it there.
Sorry to hear that. How old is your graphic card? If you have a second graphic card try that one or borrow one from a friend. Maybe your card is simply starting to die .. sucks I know.
Did you change graphic mode in Borderlands? OpenGL<->Direct3D
Or maybe there’s a corrupt driver, try to re-install them.
Well the graphic card I have now I got this summer, I had ATI radeon 4850 HD before, but there was some problems with it and I went to the shop i bought it from and got the card I have now: ATI radeon 5700 HD.
I read that driver version 10.5 would help with problems inn Borderlands but didn’t, reinstalled drivers several times as well. I have tried to set the graphic setting inn Borderlands to the lowest, all of it. The problem still occurs.
Anyway, I’m glad you took your time to try and help me out. Thanks :)
Hi i have a problem… Sorry for my language but i am Polish.
I have installed borderlands, but when i run it i have that error:
“failed to find default engine .ini to retrieve My Documents subdirectory to use.”
I have Windows 7 – 64BIT.
I search everywhere but i can’t find the solved…
thx.
tried your idea in command prompt, it started but then at the end said i was missing a file. Then it said that the Windows Package installer didn’t complete or something like that. I have Windos 7 home premium if there is a problem with it. Anyway, any one got any solutions for package installers?
